Intensive Blocks of Physiotherapy Sessions

Intensive Blocks of Physiotherapy Sessions

North and South Surrey Kids Physio Group clinics are proud to offer intensive blocks of physiotherapy with physiotherapist Nitin Ambardar this fall!

What is an Intensive Block of Physiotherapy?

“Intensive blocks” are a period of high-dose therapy intervention, which can be effective at helping children reach their physical goals. These therapy blocks are usually most appropriate for children with neurological conditions and developmental disabilities.

By accessing intensive treatment and working on exercises repeatedly over a short period of time, children have the opportunity to make important physical gains. An intensive block of physiotherapy will look different for each child, as the program will be tailored to their specific condition and goals. Our experienced physiotherapist, Nitin Ambardar, along with a physiotherapy assistant, may use a variety of clinical techniques. This includes, Cuevas Medek Exercises (CME) and Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT). Specialized equipment such as Trexo, Hypervibe, Litegait and more may also be included in your treatment plan (but note that equipment may vary depending on the location of the intensive block). Below, you will find the dates of our intensive blocks of physiotherapy:

North Surrey
Sept 8th – 12th

South Surrey
Sept 15th – 19th

Registration Process

  • The first thing to do is to fill out the interest form. You can do this online, or you can call the clinic directly to do it with an administrator.
    • We encourage you to be as specific as possible when talking about your child’s diagnosis, contraindications, previous therapy sessions, and physiotherapy goals
  • From there, the physiotherapist who runs intensive blocks will proceed to review the answers and determine eligibility.
  • When approved, a Jane profile will be created, and admin will get in touch with you to discuss the next steps
  • Once the $500 deposit is received, your visit will be booked into Jane, and you will be asked to fill out the Client Intake Form.

If your child is eligible for an intensive block of physiotherapy, you will receive an email, followed by a phone call to confirm attendance. However, due to limited availability, we encourage families to respond promptly, to secure their spot.

Initial Assessment & Treatment Plan

In the initial assessment, your physiotherapist will learn more about your child’s medical history, current complaints, and lifestyle, before moving to a physical examination. This includes looking at their poster, range of motion, muscle strength, a neurological screening, and functional assessment before making realistic short and long-term goals for your child. Then, your physiotherapist will design a tailored intensive block program (e.g, 2hrs/day for 5-10 consecutive days), based on the following techniques:

  • Functional training and task-specific exercises
  • Neuro-rehabilitation (if applicable)
  • Balance and proprioception training
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Manual therapy
  • Cardiopulmonary interventions (if needed)

Pre-Intensive Prep & Block Delivery

Pre-intensive prep consists of patient education surrounding expectations and precaution, as well as recording their outcome measures from their tests, pain scales, and more. We will then brief the family on the program for their consent, before we begin the block therapy. The daily structured sessions include:

  • Warm-up and mobility work
  • Focused therapeutic exercises/manual therapy i.e. CME, NDT treatment techniques, use of assisted ambulatory devices during treatment sessions etc.
  • Task-specific functional training
  • Recovery strategies (stretching, soft tissue release)
  • Regular monitoring and progression based on response
  • Maintain clear documentation after each session

End-of-Block Reassessment & Follow-up

Once the treatments are done, the physiotherapist will evalute patient-reported outcomes, and discuss the progress that has been made, and deliver any applicable feedback to the parents. From there, they will provide a personalized home exercise program so that the child can continue to make progress. The physio will also plan for maintenance or further outpatient sessions, as well as book follow-up appointments to monitor long-term progress.

Our physiotherapists will never recommend more treatment than is absolutely necessary – our goal is to simply ensure that your child reaches their maximum potential while making physio FUN!
