FAQ

Children undergo physiotherapy treatment to work towards their physical goals. This may include recovering from an injury, building strength, working on a skill, therapy for a specific condition and more!

Babies may require physiotherapy for several reasons including:

  • Torticollis or tightness on one side of the neck muscles. This causes the baby to prefer to turn its head one way
  • Flattening of the skull. This may be on one side (plagiocephaly) or across the whole back of the skull (brachycephaly)
  • Birth injuries such as injury to the nerves near the neck
  • Chromosomal abnormalities such as Spinal Muscle Atrophy, Down Syndrome and many other conditions
  • Hypotonia or low muscle tone. These babies feel more “floppy” than typical babies and may struggle with motor skills.
  • Gross motor delays. Babies who fall behind on rolling, crawling, sitting and more
  • Prevention! Many infant conditions are preventable and families may attend physiotherapy to avoid difficulties with infant motor development

We typically expect babies to begin walking before 18 months. If your child is over 12 months old and is not yet showing pre-walking skills such as pulling to stand or crawling, we recommend a physiotherapy assessment.

Interim Registered Physiotherapists, or Physiotherapy Residents are qualified physios registered to take the upcoming Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE) administered by the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR). Physios can practice for years with this title, simply because they haven’t had a chance to complete their practical exam. They practice while under the supervision of a Registered Physiotherapist. Each member of our team is partnered with a clinical coach and completes rigorous training in paediatrics.

As they have completed their education and several clinical placements, they can see clients independently, bill under their own name and registration number, and offer physiotherapy services covered by insurance.

If you are noticing flattening on one side (plagiocephaly) or the entire back of your baby’s head (brachycephaly) we recommend a physiotherapy assessment. Head shape is only treatable early in your child’s life and the sooner the concern is addressed, the more likely it can be improved (or even prevented!). During an assessment, your physiotherapist will collect measurements to determine the severity of the flattening and create a specialized treatment plan for your baby.

Physiotherapy is often a large component of the treatment plan for children with cerebral palsy (CP). Depending on the severity of the cerebral palsy, physiotherapists may support with:

  • Range of motion. CP often causes the muscles to become tight and physios can help ensure the joints continue to move well
  • Strengthening of affected limbs and core
  • Screening of hip development. Children with CP are more likely to experience hip dislocations
  • Support in obtaining appropriate equipment including braces, crutches, walkers, etc.
  • Skill development such as standing, walking, and more!

For more information please see our Physical & Developmental Disabilities page.

Physical therapy for children with autism will vary depending on the child’s specific goals. Many children with autism seek physical therapy for support with coordination, strengthening for low muscle tone, balance work, skill development, general strength and conditioning for healthy development and more.

Typically physiotherapy is not covered by the government, but please check with your province. We also bill directly to many insurance providers and can assist you in applying for a grant if you do not have coverage for private therapies.

At Kids Physio Group, it is our mission to provide the care needed for ALL kids to reach their maximum physical potential and 100% recover from injury. We understand the importance of early intervention and providing fun, effective physiotherapy to help children achieve their goals. Our approach focuses on providing specialized care tailored to each child's needs, ensuring they receive the support necessary for a full recovery.
