Equipment Feature: Gyro Wheel
Kids Physio Group was introduced to this fantastic piece of equipment! The Gyro Wheel
is used to assist children with learning how to ride a “2-wheeler” bike and is replacing the use of training wheels. The wheel comes in two different sizes for kids bikes, a 12” and a 16”. The gyro wheel replaces the front wheel of the child’s bike during the learning process and can be removed once they are comfortable riding independently. The wheel has a stability disc inside, which spins in the opposite direction that the wheel is turning in and has three settings: low, medium and high. The higher the setting the faster the stability disc spins and therefore the gyro wheel provides more stabilization. When a child becomes unstable the stability disc creates a torque that turns the handle bars into the fall, allowing the bike to become straight and the child to overcome the instability. When the gyro wheel is on “high” it can hold the bike upright and allow it to ride on its’ own! This great new discovery provides children with the ability to gradually decrease the amount of assistance with riding a 2-wheeler, by adjusting the level of the stability disc, and in turn builds riding confidence.
