What’s your Shape Of The Day?

Picture Symbols help the children at Kids Physiotherapy to stay on track.  The children love to know what to expect in their session and they help make choices about exercises too!

Recently, I met with Themy Theodoridis from Vital Visual Communication to revamp the picture symbols at the clinic.  Themy also helps families at home by creating an organized environment using picture symbols.

For more information, you can contact Themy

Dance Unlimited

I just heard about a great dance program starting THIS SATURDAY, April 10th.  Check out this link to the Riley Park Community Centre for Dance Unlimited.  You can register your child online… but don’t wait…they still need a couple more kiddos to make the class run.

Keep moving!

iPad/iphone/itouch + slick app = communication freedom

Wow.  Today one of my clients came in to the clinic toting an iPod touch with a very special app.  The app is called the proloquo2go (latin for speak out loud) and is a communication solution for people who have difficulty speaking.  Now, I am not an expert in communication but I have never seen such ease of use with an AAC device and never at this price.  Today, Josh had communication freedom and it was FUN!

Check out this video!

The proloquo2go app is $189.00 and is available on at the itunes store.

Watch for it at Kids Physio soon!

CrutchAbility

Last week I paid a visit to Crutch Ability (Award Prosthetics) in Burnaby to test drive some forearm crutches.   Some of you know that I am having surgery next Monday to repair torn cartilage in my hip and will be off my feet for a while.  So I decided to take my own advice (physiotherapists don’t often do that!…) and will use forearm crutches to get around after the surgery. I often prescribe these to my pediatric clients who have had surgery or who are transitioning out of a walker.  The feedback has been positive from the little ones, so why not try a pair for myself?!

Why forearm crutches and not standard crutches?  Forearm crutches are better for your posture and put no pressure on the delicate areas under your armpits.  They are lighter and less cumbersome than standard crutches and now come in all sorts of amazing and fun colors at Crutch Ability.  You can also get ergonomic hand grips to protect your wrists and there is a whole array of crutch tips to prevent slipping.

The UK has been using this style of crutch over the standard style for years.  Even David Beckham sported a pair following his achilles tendon rupture.  And how about that amazing athletic and artistic display at the Paralympic Opening Ceremonies last month by Luca Patuelli?
